If you're downloading files from the Net, then you should be sure to protect yourself first with a good anti-virus utility. Viruses are small programs that can be contained in any type of executable file that you download. Their effects can range from mischievous pranks to serious damage of your computer.
Before you fork over $40 or so for a commercial product, check out one of the excellent free anti-virus utilities that we list below.
The programs we list here will either clean and/or scan your computer for viruses. And be sure that you check with the provider of the anti-virus program that you download for periodic updates, as new viruses are appearing all the time on the Web.

AntiVir Personal Edition - This easy-to-use freeware antivirus utility detects over 40,000 viruses and includes a resident monitor and desktop program. Scans for DOS, Windows, macros and Java viruses. Available in German and English. (Available for Windows 98/95 and NT 4.x).
InoculateIT anti-virus utility - Here's an easy-to-use, powerful freeware anti-virus program. InoculateIT automatically detects and cleans conventional file and boot sector viruses as well as macro viruses that infect Office 95, Office 98, and Office 2000 Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and Access databases. Software updates and virus signature updates are free, as well. (For Windows 98/95 and NT).
AVG 6.0 Free Edition - Here's an excellent, freeware anti-virus utility that also offers you free monthly updates. An easy-to-use program, AVG features resident protection, an E-mail scanner and "automatic healing" of infected files. Note that the freeware version of this program is only valid for users in the U.S., Canada and Britain. 4.6 megabytes. (For Windows 98/95).
AllAdvantage.com's VirusScan offer - You can use McAfee's popular VirusScan service when you sign up with the "get paid to surf" company, AllAdvantage. If you use this service, AllAdvantage will deduct 50 cents per month from your account. AllAdvantage pays you to display their ad-laden "Viewbar" on your desktop. While the Viewbar is displayed, you'll earn 50 cents per hour. More significantly, you can also earn money by referring others to AllAdvantage.com.
- McAfee VirusScan is available for Windows 98/95. (It is not available for NT, Windows 2000 or Macs). The file is 12.1 megabytes in size.

Free anti-virus CD - Fill out the form to request a free "Trend Enterprise Solution CD," which contains fully-functional versions of anti-virus products that can protect virus entryways into your network. Offer available for corporate end users only. International availability.
HouseCall online virus scanning - Here's a free service that offers online virus scanning. There's nothing to install; just follow the simple instructions. Developed by Trend Micro, HouseCall scans for and cleans viruses via the Web through ActiveX and Java technology. An advantage to this service is that it's always up-to-date. This is a big plus, when you consider that hundreds of new viruses emerge every week, thus making regular anti-virus programs quickly obsolete.
Anyware Antivirus - An excellent free utility, Anyware will scan your computer for viruses (and let you delete any infected files). Anyware detects all the latest viruses, including Polymorph, Stealth, Trojan Horse, Multi-Partite, E-mail, Internet and macro viruses. Note: this free utility is a scanner only; for virus-cleaning capabilities, you must upgrade to the commercial product. Available for Windows and DOS.
McAfee Clinic - No longer free, but you can sign up for a 14-day free trial period. The anti-virus software company McAfee offers an online virus detection service that will check your PC and remove all viruses. There are several other handy online services here, as well, including a "2000 ToolBox Online," which can check and fix potential Year 2000 issues on your PC. Requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.02 or more recent.

F-PROT antivirus utility - Data Fellows is giving away the DOS version of their excellent F-PROT anti-virus utility. This version is free for home users.
AntiVirus E-mail Update Notification - If you want to protect yourself against computer viruses, you must do more than simply download an anti-virus program. You need to keep it current, with the latest updates. With this free service, you will receive an automatic notification by E-mail whenever there is a new release of the antivirus software package(s) you use. You need register once and may send a cancel command at any time.
Worm.ExploreZip utility - Worm.ExploreZip, a major virus (actually, technically, a "worm,") was wreaking havoc on the Net several months ago. Symantec Corp., makers of antivirus programs, is offering a free utility to remove an active Worm.ExploreZip infection from a Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT computer. (48 kilobytes).
Data Fellows Screen Saver - A free screen saver that offers information and advice about computer viruses and how to protect your PC. Educational and fun. Features anti-virus-fighting superhero, "Captain F-Secure." From Data Fellows, makers of anti-virus software. (3 megabytes). For Windows 98/95 and 3.1.
Bootminder - (Direct download: 106 kilobytes). This free utility will warn you if a floppy is in your A: drive when closing down Windows. This way, you won't start up with the floppy still in it. Result: no boot-virus infection. Bootminder runs in the background until you forget to remove your floppy. For Windows.
