Free specialized E-mail services
|
Here is a roundup of the Web's most notable specialized E-mail-related services. These include free mailing list services, which allow you to send a message to hundreds of people who've subscribed to your E-mail "newsletter" (a useful way to keep in touch with visitors to your Web site or your business's customers.)
We also list several new services that allow you to send E-mail to a service that will print out your message and forward it, as well as services that allow you to add E-mail to your own Web site.
Please send us E-mail if you're aware of any specialized free E-mail-related services that we haven't listed below.
|
Repliance.com - Here's a unique free service that lets you send polls by E-mail to your friends and colleagues, as well as easily manage their answers. You can use it to plan events; decide issues as a group; get suggestions, etc. Recipients only need to click to respond.
InfoBeat - Get personalized news and alerts sent to you via E-mail with this helpful free service. Many categories, including finance, sports, ski snow reports, entertainment, weather and reminders. (Formerly known as Mercury Mail).
SpamCop - Fed up with spam? This free service helps you battle unsolicited junk E-mail and helps you punish spammers by reporting them (which is normally a tedious, technical process). There's a helpful FAQ here to help you get started.
T-Mail.com - This nifty, free easy-to-use service will translate your E-mail for you. You can use it to help ease the language barrier with your friend and business contacts overseas. Supported languages are English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese. Note that the translations are done by computer and, as a result, may be flawed, and "cannot be relied upon for documents which require precise translation."
Everyone.net - Do you have a Web site? Have you ever wanted to offer a free E-mail service of your own to your site's visitors (just like the big boys like Yahoo and Lycos)? Everyone.net offers such a service: they offer "industrial strength," branded E-mail that you can customize to match your site's appearance. What's more, you can earn revenue with this service (You get half of the ad inventory to run your own banners). We've used Everyone.net for the past month and have been pleased with their service: it's solid and reliable.
Autobots.net - We've had several requests lately for a free autoresponder service. (Autoresponders are automated E-mail services that let you send a custom message on demand to anyone who requests it). Autobots.net is the best such service on Net: it's free of ads and allows you to send up to 10 follow-up messages. Lots of options are available here and a daily activity log will be delivered to your E-mail address.
MessageClick - A useful free service that provides you with a personal phone number at which your friends, customers and colleagues may send you faxes and voice messages. MessageClick also delivers fax and voice messages as E-mail attachments, directly into your current E-mail account. You can then view your faxes and listen to your voice messages from your PC. What's more, MessageClick doesn't pester you with ads. Note that MessageClick's phone numbers are currently confined to the U.S.
ListBot - This service offers a free mailing list for your Web site. ListBot's mailing lists allow you to send announcements and news to people who sign up. It uses a centralized database so that list members only have to enter their information once and can manage all of their subscriptions from a single Web site. This is the best free mailing list provider we've seen.
MessageX - This innovative new free service lets you turn your pager, or your PCS phone, into a wireless messaging center. Thus, anyone with Net access can reach you, 24 hours a day, no matter where you are. With MessageX, anyone can send you a message, using your regular E-mail address.
Send E-mail to your GSM mobile phone - Interesting new free service that allows you to send E-mail messages to your GSM mobile phone. Note: this site is experiencing heavy traffic and they're upgrading their servers to accommodate demand. Currently, they're not accepting new registrations (although you can still use the service without registering). Registration, when it resumes, will allow you to use their address book and message logging features.
eGroups - How'd you like to start your own E-mail list? The possibilities are endless: it could be for your family, your business, your high school class, your book club, etc. FindMail offers a solid, free Web-based E-mail list service. The lists can be public or private and all the lists are archived. Private list archives can only be viewed by list members. (This service was formerly called FindMail).
Find Me-Mail - If you've ever changed your E-mail address or anticipate doing so, then check out this free service. Find Me-Mail
offers a place to post your new E-mail address for your old E-mail contacts. When you register with their directory and update your information you won't have to worry about losing contact with anyone again. Offered in English, German, Spanish and French.
Mailto Encoder - Fight spam with this free service, which will format your E-mail address in a way that makes it unreadable by any E-mail extractor or search engine (the favorite tools of spammers).
ONElist mailing list service - This is a full-featured mailing list system. It is easy to set up and moderate. This service is advertiser-supported and appends a small ad to the top of your newsletters. (Like many free mailing list providers, ONElist has grown rapidly in popularity and they apparently haven't been able to keep up with demand. Visitors report that the service can be very slow at times).
CoolMail - An intriguing free service that allows you to listen to your E-mail from any POP3 account by phone. The only "catch" is that when you log in, you must listen to a message from their sponsor, before you can hear your mail messages. You can then respond using any of four pre-defined replies that you've created. You can also send audio replies to any other CoolMail member, and they can reply to you. The first 60 minutes of calling CoolMail each month is free. The basic service, CoolMail Bronze, has no monthly charge and includes toll-free access from anywhere in North America.
Free targeted E-mail - This site is offering a deal in which you can send 100 targeted E-mails (not spam) to customers who have already expressed an interest in your goods or service.
Free E-mail to fax service. - Not sure how much longer this service will be around---it allows you to send a free fax within a certain covered area. You may either send a fax through your Web browser or through your E-mail client.
Faxaway - Give these people your E-mail address and you'll be able to take a "test drive" of their service (i.e., send a free fax).
Epost - If you send an E-mail to this service, they will print it out and post it to any street address in India. Your acquaintances in India can keep in touch, as well, by posting a letter to this service, which will in turn E-mail it to you.
Cool List - - This service offers free Web-based mailing lists that are easy to set up. This one-of-a-kind service does have major problems, though. We have had many complaints about Cool List. From our own experience, we found the service was often too slow. Also, at times you might find your messages don't get sent out (or get sent out twice). Not recommended.
Never Forget - Never forget another important date with this free service. Just type in the holidays and special events you want to be reminded of and get an E-mail reminder sent to you.
GeoCities - This popular service gives you a free E-mail account, a home page and 11 megabytes of space for your Web pages. Go here for a complete roundup of the best free Web space providers on the Net.
E-mail Reminders & Alerts - This is a roundup of E-mail "reminder" services that can help you organize your life and remind you of anything from changing your car's oil to birthdays and anniversaries.
