A large number of wonderful, high-quality sound programs are available, free for the downloading, from the Web. These programs will do everything from playing your sounds to allowing you to create new sounds of your own. You can also manipulate sound files, organize your collection of sounds and music and much more with these programs.

MP3 Fiend - If you're really serious about building your MP3 sound file collection, then this wonderful program is for you. MP3 Fiend is a freeware, ad-supported MP3 metasearch engine. It quickly queries 11 MP3 search engines simultaneously and will locate both FTP and HTTP files (and will verify the search engines' results for you). It's also available in an ad-free version, which costs $25. (3 megabytes). For Windows 98/95 and NT4.
Napster - A must for MP3 enthusiasts, Napster takes the hassle out of searching for MP3s online. Using Napster's easy-to-use interface, you can find your favorite files, while avoiding broken links, slow downloads and disorganized FTP sites. Other handy features include chat; a hotlist to help you keep track of your fave MP3 libraries; and an audio player (so you can play MP3 files). (620 kilobytes). For Windows 98/95 and NT.
DFX - Here's a plug-in that greatly enhances the sound of the Web's most popular MP3 sound file player, Winamp. Available in a freeware version, DFX helps correct the sonic limitations of MP3 and Windows Media, (both of which often suffer from muffled sound and loss of stereo separation). 1.6 megabytes. Sound Control Plus - Here's a handy new little freeware sound utility that lets you dynamically adjust your sound volume using keyboard hot keys. Perfect for anyone who is constantly having to open the sound mixer to adjust the volume when listening to sound files recorded at different volume levels. Support to control Winamp's Next, Previous and Pause buttons via a series of hot keys is also included. (For Windows 98/95). 196 kilobytes.
AxelCD - This attractive, easy-to-use freeware program is the best CD player program we've seen yet. Features an eye-catching, intuitive interface, with nice animated buttons and "touch sensitive" and "click sensitive" areas. Options include autoplay on disk insertion, minimization to the system tray, always on top status, and more. (For Windows 98/95 and NT). 169 kilobytes.
Nullsoft Winamp 2.6 - The Web's most popular MP3 sound file player, Winamp, recently became freeware (previously, it required a registration fee). Winamp is a flexible, high-fidelity sound file player that supports MP3, CD, Audiosoft, MOD, WAV and other formats. There are endless ways to customize this player via "skins" (which change the appearance of the interface), as well as audio effect plugins of various sorts. (602 kilobytes). Anvil Studio - This is a free Windows program for recording, playing, composing and editing MIDI music using and sampled percussion sounds.
Anvil features many effects, such as delay, pitch change, volume and filtering. You can also compose rhythm tracks with your own sampled percussion sounds. An essential sound program if you want to work with MIDI sound files. Here's a screen shot. (For Windows 98/95 and NT).
Abe’s MP3 Finder - Looking for MP3 files? This outstanding freeware program makes it easy to search for just the MP3 you're seeking across the Web. Using it, you'll avoid much of the frustration of encountering broken links. Abe’s MP3 Finder uses more reliable sources, where most links work. (1.2 megabytes). For Windows 98/95/NT).
RealJukebox - RealNetworks' ground-breaking free program turns your PC into a jukebox. It's easy to use and amazingly versatile. RealJukebox lets you record and play music from your CDs on your PC's hard drive. It also allows you to manage thousands of songs and create customized playlists. RealJukebox also records and plays back in MP3, RealAudio, Liquid Audio and WAV sound file formats.
HammerHead Rhythm Station - So you've heard the latest in techno and drum 'n' bass and you think you can do better, huh? Try out this easy-to-use freeware drum program. HammerHead lets you easily create drum loops on your PC. You can edit on the fly and record your actions to a high quality and completely noise-free WAV sound file. It features 23 separate drum patches and 6 complete loops to sequence cool breakbeats right away. There's also a feature to implement banks with 6 samples of your own. 1.4 megabytes (For Windows 98/95 and NT).

Sonique - A free MP3 and audio CD player, Sonique offers a cool animated control panel and lots of options and configurations, such as an equalizer balance and the ability to change tempos, etc. (717 kilobytes). For Windows 98/95 and NT.
FoxPlay - Have you got a bunch of sound files scattered all over your hard drive? Then check out FoxPlay, an excellent, free music utility that'll let you easily organize all the sound files you have into a single, manageable playlist. FoxPlay uses the Windows Multimedia System to play MIDI files, and it allows you to use your favorite MOD and MP3 players to play MOD and MP3 files, respectively. FoxPlay also has built-in support for mIRC, the popular chat client. (For Windows: 245 kilobytes).
RealPlayer G2 - We've been highly pleased with RealNetworks' free client for viewing "streaming" (real-time) sound & video content on the Web. This must-have program offers much improved audio and better graphics than previous versions. They claim you'll need a 28.8K modem to use it, but in reality you'd better have a 56K modem to avoid frustration. This program is for Window 95/98/NT only. Users of Macs, Win 3.1 and Unix can download earlier RealPlayer clients here. Free for individual use.
Maplay - Here's a fully-featured free sound utility that offers a decoder for MPEG and other types of sound files. Using MPEG Audio Layer III, you can retain CD-quality sound at compression ratios around 1:11 (112 kbit/s). Not the fastest player around, but features many nice touches such as lyric and image display for playlist items and embedded lists on playlists. For Windows. Versions are available for Linux, Mac, OS/2, BeOS, HP-UX, and FreeBSD, as well.
Yamp sound utility - If you're downloading sound files off the Web, you're going to need a good sound player utility to hear them. Yamp fits the bill well. This free program from Germany plays virtually every format out there, including WAV files (all formats, also compressed ones), MIDs, RMIs, MODs, S3Ms, XMs, ITs, AVIs, MPAs, MP1s, MP2s and MP3s, MPEG, and AVI. It offers powerful playlists, Drag and Drop and much more. For Windows. This file is 1,954K in size and should take 10 minutes to download at 28.8 modem speed.
Clarion - This is an outstanding free MIDI and audio CD player for Windows. Has a number of cool features, such as CDDB suppport (which will look up CD track titles via the Net). Also lets you open multiple playlists at once and has a built-in file browser, a "sleep" mode, supports Drag `n Drop and much more. Here's a screen shot.
PureVoice Player/Recorder - This free application offers a player and recorder for voice messages that you can use with your E-mail software. PureVoice offers excellent sound quality and its files are 10 times smaller than WAV files. There's a plug-in specifically for Eudora software, and a separate application for other E-mail products.
