Free sounds and music on the Web

Some of the coolest freebies on the Web these days come in the form of various sound files that are cropping up everywhere.
These range from MP3 files that feature full-length songs to MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) files that you can use to add music to your Web site. Then, there's the ubiquitous "WAV" files that often feature short snippets of music, sound effects and clips from Hollywood, etc.
There's a lot of things you can do with sound files. You can add cool sound effects for various "events" on your computer (like emptying the recycle bin). Or you can easily embed a MIDI background sound on your Web page. Or you may simply want to collect a collection of cinema-related sound files to relive your favorite silver screen moments.
Please send us E-mail if you're aware of any such free sound-related resources that we haven't listed below.

Free WAV sound file resources
In this section, TheFreeSite.com takes a look at the best places to grab some free WAV sound files for your computer. WAV sound files are typically fairly small in size. They usually contain content such as short snippets from movies or songs. They're ideal for giving your computer some pizzazz. Just assign some WAV files for different "events" on your computer and let the fun begin! As for me, every time my recycle bin empties, I hear the sounds of Curly getting slugged by Moe.

Free MIDI sound files
Here, TheFreeSite.com reviews the best resources on the Web for getting the ever-popular "MIDI" (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) files. The MIDI file is probably the single most popular sound format on the Web. If you encounter a Web site that features background music, odds are you're listening to a MIDI file. (And the process of adding music to your own site is quite easy).

Free music software
You can download all the music and sounds you want from the Web. But if you don't have a sound utility to play it back, you're out of luck. Fortunately, a large number of wonderful, high-quality free sound programs is available. These programs will do everything from playing your sounds to allowing you to make new sounds of your own. You can also manipulate sound files, organize your collection of sounds and music and much more with these freeware programs.

MP3 resources
Here, we take a look at MP3 file resources. A relatively new form of sound file, the MP3 format made it possible for entire songs to be compressed into a small, manageable file that can be downloaded in a reasonable amount of time, without significant audio quality loss. Be wary what you download: many MP3 sites feature copyrighted materials.

Free Real Audio and other "streaming" resources
This is a roundup of Real Audio and other "streaming" audio and video resources on the Web. The advantage to streaming audio is that you can listen to "live" content, such as newscasts, without a cumbersome download waiting period. However, streaming audio and video has a ways to go before it reaches mass acceptance. The technology is still buggy and the sound quality often ranges from fair to poor. In addition, you're going to need a fairly speedy (56K) connection to be able to really enjoy streaming content.
