FreeLane - Are you still paying for your Net access? If so, you should check out one of the growing number of free access providers out there.
A new entrant in this genre is FreeLane, (which like most services of this type, is ad-supported). They offer 56K modem connections.
Service is available in most areas in the U.S. and Canada. (For Windows 98/95 and NT). A Mac version is promised "in the spring."
X:drive free online hard drive - This marvelous free service offers you a 25 megabyte online hard drive that lets you store and retrieve your files from any Web browser. X:drive offers a unique desktop application that looks and functions just like any other drive on your computer. Using this feature, you can drag, drop, and edit files using the standard Windows Explorer or the My Computer interface. (For Windows 98/95 and NT).
Tellme - An ingenious free service, Tellme lets you access the information you need from the Web via phone, using a toll-free number. With Tellme, you can retrieve info about restaurants, traffic, movies, stocks, the weather, etc. This service is still in beta (the official opening won't be until summer), but you can sign up for a free preview of the service now. New users may face a two week waiting period before they can access the service. (U.S. only).
TypingWeb - Do you need help on improving your typing skills? This unique online service offers a free typing tutor program. All you need is a Net connection and a browser (the service works best with Internet Explorer).
SocialNet.com - Looking for a date? This site offers a free online matchmaking service that links you up with people in your area who share your interests (based on the results of a short survey). Besides romance, you can use this service to link up with professional contacts with their free "WorkingNetwork" service. They also offer a free service to help you locate a roommate.
Bandwidth Speed Test - Does your Net connection seem slow today? Find out how it is performing with this handy, free online bandwidth test. Works with all types of connections: dial-up modems, ASDL, cable modems and ISDN.
Free Outlook Mail stationery - We've had a number of requests lately from visitors using Outlook Express Mail, asking where they can get custom stationery to liven up their correspondence. This is the place to go. Here, you'll find a wonderful collection of free themed stationery for use on Outlook. Each self-installing package includes beautiful scrolling backgrounds, and some include music. (These files are for Outlook Express running on Windows 98/95. They won't work on Outlook Express for the Mac).
Free personal horoscope - What do the stars hold in store for you? Fill out the short form to get your free personalized horoscope from Astrocenter, a nifty site that's loaded with astrology information. You can also get free readings and forecasts in numerology, Chinese astrology, natal charts and more here.
Free scholarship search - Looking for scholarship information? A free search service, fastWEB, offers loads of data on more than 400,000 scholarships worth over $1 billion. Here, you'll find information about scholarships, grants, and fellowships. You can apply online here, too, through the "E-Scholarship" program.
Quickbrowse - A highly useful free service that's unlike anything we've ever seen. Quickbrowse visits your favorite sites daily and then automatically combines them for you to view on one handy Web page. It can also be set to automatically send your favorite Web sites' content to you as E-mail. Quickbrowse has other useful features, as well (for example, it can be set to automatically get rid of ads on Web pages).
Complete surveys for prizes - How'd you like to get paid for your opinions? Sign up with NPD Online Research and you'll have a shot at winning prizes or cash for completing their periodic surveys. NPD is a market research company. In their surveys, they ask your opinions on products and services, including everything from computer software to automobiles to vacation experiences.
MCSE Directory - If you're studying for the MCSE (Microsoft Certification Exam), then this new directory is a must-visit. Here, you'll find a comprehensive roundup of free MCSE resources on the Web, including practice tests, study guides, free books and "brain dumps" (sites that offer free online training).
Repliance.com - Here's a unique free service that lets you send polls by E-mail to your friends and colleagues, as well as easily manage their answers. You can use it to plan events; decide issues as a group; get suggestions, etc. Recipients only need to click to respond.
MC MCSE - Are you preparing for the MCSE (Microsoft Certification Exam)? Click over to this helpful site, which offers loads of free study guides and test information. There's also career news, a message board and other helpful free resources.
Stock Picks Central - This site offers a free daily stock market tip, along with an analysis of each selection. Past picks are archived, along with details on how each stock performed.
JobsOnline - A must-visit site for job-seekers, JobsOnline offers a number of useful free services to both employers and those who are looking for a job. Currently, the site offers 200,000 job listings. Free services here include a job aptitude test, a salary comparison service and "JobFacts," a free monthly E-zine. If you register now, you'll get a free 30-minute calling card.
Theme Site of the Day - Click over to this well-done site for a daily dose of the Web's top desktop theme sites. Each site is rated in four categories: content, design, navigation and load time. You can also view an archive of past selections.
Visto - Here's a highly useful free online "personal information manager" (PIM) that can help you organize your business and social life. Services here include an appointment calendar; an E-mail service; group applications for community building and an integrated event tracker. Visto also automatically synchronizes your data every time you log into the service (and supports many popular PIMs, such as Microsoft Outlook). Sign up now and you'll be entered into a contest in which you could win a Toshiba Notebook, a Targus Rolling Case and an Epson Printer.
Dialpad.com - Need a break on your phone bill? This unique service lets you make free unlimited long distance calls, via your computer. Dialpad is Java-powered, so you don't need to download and install software to use this service. Note: service requires Windows 98/95/NT, Internet Explorer (version 4 or more recent) or Netscape (version 4.5 or more recent). You'll also need a sound card, speakers and a microphone. (International availability, but currently you may only place calls to U.S. phone numbers).
Priceline.com - This helpful free service lets you "name your own price for leisure air travel." You name the price you want to pay and Priceline finds a major airline willing to release seats on flights where they have unsold space. Tickets can be requested up to six months in advance.
ShoppingList.com - A handy free service that helps alert you to bargains at stores near where you live. ShoppingList.com lists thousands of advertised specials and promotions at your favorite local stores. Just sign up and indicate what product you're looking for, or browse by department, store, or brand. If you so choose, they'll send you an E-mail alert when the product you want goes on sale. (U.S. only).
Free Weekly Horoscopes - Sign up for this free service and they will send you your own personalized horoscope each weekly via E-mail. You can also get your horoscope information at this site, as well.
AnyDay.com - A marvelous free service, AnyDay.com offers users their own private online "DayPlanner" service. This includes a calendar; an address book for your contacts; a place to keep track of your to-do lists; and your own personal reminder service. You may also easily synchronize your data here with your Palm Pilot, as well as other hand-held organizers.
DirectCoupons - A handy resource if you're looking to save money, DirectCoupons offers a free weekly E-mail newsletter that focuses on coupons, freebies and bargains on the Net. The newsletter has over 150,000 subscribers.
MyCoupons.com - Register with this free service and they'll periodically send you electronic coupons, which you may either print, click, or call to redeem. Most of the coupons are good for only U.S. residents. However approximately one-third of the coupons and offers here are valid internationally. MyCoupons also offers a free E-mail service, as well as free Web space.
Gator - Are you fed up with filling out forms on the Web? Are you having a tough time remembering all your passwords? Then snag a free copy of Gator, a handy program that automatically fills out forms for you and remembers your passwords. It's safe and secure: Gator guards your information in an encrypted file on your computer.
Dine 4 Less - Do you like to eat out? Click over to this site to access free, money-saving dining coupons and special offers. They also offer restaurant recipes, dining cams, postcards & food shopping info.
FastWorker: Free groupware service - Here's a free online groupware and project/task management package. Just register with the FastWorker server and you may begin using their free groupware program. A flexible program, it offers an instant Intranet, operational management, project management and more. Requires recent versions of Netscape or Internet Explorer.
- The new version of FastWorker adds many features and lets you easily and quickly create a new online workgroup. FastWorker has installed a new, speedier server, which has improved service.
Babies Online - Have you got a newborn in the family? Then check out this free birth announcement service for new parents. They offer free Web pages announcing births, so that faraway families can share in the bragging. They also feature a monthly baby-related contest for prizes such as blankets, etc.
Free online photo albums - PictureTrail offers free, online photo albums that let you share your photos with family and friends online. Simple to set up: just point and click to place your pictures into your own personal online photo album. PictureTrail also awards prizes each month for the best photos. Note: you may keep your photos private, or share them with the world. (Formerly known as EasyFoto). This service supports WebTV, as well.
Free photo editing service - Need a basic photo editing job done? This site will perform basic services such as image enhancement and removal of blemishes for free. Just E-mail them your gif or jpeg image file and read their terms of service.
Freecall - (U.K. only). An ad-supported service, Freecall offers free Net access (via an 0800 number) to individuals and businesses in Britain. Freecall supports V90, K56Flex and ISDN standards.
Free announcement lists - No matter what you're interested in, you'll find an E-mail list that covers the topic here. These free E-mail lists cover many subjects, including freebies, business, computers, children's stuff, education, games, health, the Web, shopping, sports, travel and more. These lists offer information about discounts, products and special offers.
Free UK ISP List - In the U.S., there are only a handful of free Net access services, (such as NetZero.) However, in Britain there are dozens of free Net access providers. This site rounds them up and gives details on each service. (Britain only).
MessageX - This innovative new free service lets you turn your pager, or your PCS phone, into a wireless messaging center. Thus, anyone with Net access can reach you, 24 hours a day, no matter where you are. With MessageX, anyone can send you a message, using your regular E-mail address.
Apply for a free PC - (Note: offer has been suspended). Free-PC.com is giving away Compaq 333 MHz computers (including free Net access) that are "available free of charge for two years to qualified applicants." Basically the way this works is that you fill out their survey and, if you're among the applicants whose demographics match what they're looking for, you'll get a free PC. These PCs display advertisements on the borders of the screen at all times. (U.S. only).

Transloader - This free file transfer service is perfect for WebTV users who don't have a way to transfer content. It's also useful for the users of various free Web space providers (GeoCities, Angelfire, Tripod, etc.) who need a way to upload files. Also, those who haven't figured out how to use an FTP program will find Transloader helpful.
LBE Helpdesk - If you run a Web business, you'll find this free multi-user "helpdesk system" handy for a variety of uses, from customer service to order tracking to enquiry processing. It's compliant with MAPI mail.
