  • Desktop.com - This site offers what may well be a glimpse of the future of computing. Here, you can sign up for a free, fully functional online desktop. It's complete with applications, games, bookmarks, 10 megs of storage space and more. Perfect for anyone who works on multiple computers. What's more, Desktop.com is an open platform, so any developer can build an application here through its publicly available programming interface.
  • FreeDrive - Here's a unique free service that gives you your own personal 50-megabyte Web-based online hard drive, available anywhere. With FreeDrive, you can easily upload & download any files you choose from anywhere. Handy for storing anything from work files to MP3s to images. This service is password-protected, so only you will have access to your FreeDrive (although, with the use of "Keywords," you can share access with friends and family----but their access will be limited to downloads only). File uploads can be done with almost all Netscape browsers and Internet Explorer. (If your copy of IE is before version 4.0, you'll need to upgrade to use FreeDrive.)
  • FreeAirMiles.com - This new site plans to offer frequent flyer miles that you can earn by surfing the Web and visiting sites that participate in their network. You earn 10 frequent flyer miles every time you visit a participating site, with a maximum of 100 miles per day. Note that you can't visit the same advertiser 10 times in a row on any given day. (This site hasn't officially launched yet, but you can sign up now).
  • FreeAdvice.com - Looking for free legal advice? There's plenty of consumer advice available at this comprehensive site. There's a vast number of topics to select from: tax law, intellectual property, labor law, estate planning, bankruptcy law and much more. The information appears to be up-to-date and, in many cases, reflects recent changes in the law. Here, you can browse for basic information (and if you want to pursue the matter further, there's a handy state-by-state categorized index to help you select a lawyer specializing in a given field).
  • NetZero - NetZero offers you free Net access in exchange for displaying ad space in your browser. They support 56K FLEX and V90 modem standards. They provide local access numbers to most major and many medium-sized cities in the U.S. In order to participate, you must download their "zCast" software program, which requires at least a 486 system with 16 megs of RAM and 12 megs of hard drive space. NetZero's only drawback is that connecting can be slow, due to their proprietary dialer program. U.S. only. (For Windows 98/95). A Mac version is promised eventually.
    • If you sign up with NetZero, then you might want to explore SDNet Super Tool, a utility that helps make this free ISP function like a standard dialup connection and helps you cope better with the ads that NetZero displays. SDNet Super Tool itself, however, is not free (it costs $10 to register).
