A new entrant in this genre is FreeLane, (which like most services of this type, is ad-supported). They offer 56K modem connections.

- LinkCounter.com - Have you ever wondered how many clicks your site is sending to an affiliate program or linkback partner? This unique free service monitors the number of clicks your links are getting. It also monitors internal links so you'll know where your visitors are going.
- Get paid to surf the Web - If you haven't signed up for CyberGold, you really need to. They'll link you up with advertisers that pay you to read ads and explore the Web. There are many similar services on the Web that claim to pay you money, but CyberGold is one of the few that delivers. As long as you're going to be surfing around the Web, you might as well get paid for it, right? A popular program, CyberGold has over 1.5 million members.
- WebProvider.com - We've had a number of requests lately for a free Web hosting service that offers full CGI access and FrontPage extensions. This ace free hoster offers these services and a lot more. WebProvider.com gives you 10 megs of space, free hosting of virtual and non-virtual domains and telnet/FTP access. Tech support here is solid. Members are required to display either pop-up ads or banner ads on their pages.
- Excite Chat - Search portal Excite's new Voice Chat program offers both voice and text chat capabilities. With Voice Chat, you can talk to people around the world; have your own private chat room; and talk to up to 10 people simultaneously. Available for Windows and Macs. (2 megabytes). Note: voice chat feature not available for Macs.
- Free online photo albums - PictureTrail offers free, online photo albums that let you share your photos with family and friends online. Simple to set up: just point and click to place your pictures into your own personal online photo album. PictureTrail also awards prizes each month for the best photos. Note: you may keep your photos private, or share them with the world. (Formerly known as EasyFoto). This service supports WebTV, as well.
- AAANewsletters.com - If you're looking for a free newsletter about a particular topic, this is the place to go. AAANewsletters.com offers a large roundup of 175 of the Web's top newsletters, sorted by category. Topics include cars, business, parenting, contests, food, freebies, genealogy, health, humor, investing, self-improvement, sports, travel, women's issues, writing, and more.
- SocialNet.com - Looking for a date? This site offers a free online matchmaking service that links you up with people in your area who share your interests (based on the results of a short survey). Besides romance, you can use this service to link up with professional contacts with their free "WorkingNetwork" service. They also offer a free service to help you locate a roommate.
- InfoBeat - Get personalized news and alerts sent to you via E-mail with this helpful free service. Many categories, including finance, sports, ski snow reports, entertainment, weather and reminders. (Formerly known as Mercury Mail).
- Free personal horoscope - What do the stars hold in store for you? Fill out the short form to get your free personalized horoscope from Astrocenter, a nifty site that's loaded with astrology information. You can also get free readings and forecasts in numerology, Chinese astrology, natal charts and more here.
